Alois was just five years old when his father, Charles Grover Aufrichtig, died in 1918.  His mother Edith married again in 1923. Her second husband was Rudolph Stulz, who adopted Alois and his sister Bernice, thereby changing their names from Aufrichtig to Stulz.
